The man described in explicit detail the plays of a football game to the girl. On the left was were two funny looking people, a man and a woman. ![]() Holden then observes the people at the tables surrounding him. Holden is very critical of the piano player calling him a phony and that he was “putting all these dumb, show-offy ripples in the high notes and a lot of other very tricky stuff.” that were unnecessary and yet he bows very humbly. “How the hell should I know a stupid thing like that?”įollowing this, Holden asks if Horwitz wants to get a drink possibly because he is lonely, and later states that he wanted to go “back to the hotel, but it was too early and i didn’t feel much like being all alone.” Old Horwitz turned all the way around and looked at me. Horwitz giving an explanation that the ducks and fish just stay in the lake during winter doesn’t satisfy Holden and shows that not everyone will have the answer to his problems. He is very eager to find out what happens to ducks during winter and whether they’ll be alright, which may link back to his own wellbeing or those who have left him such as D.B or Allie. The frozen lagoon and the ducks travelling show how much Holden wants to get away and how stuck he is in the city full of phonies. Him and Horowitz argued on what happened before he gets out infront of Ernie’s Bar. He asks Horwitz, his cab driver, what happens to the ducks during winter in the lake in the park. Holden begins the chapter in a cleaner cab than the ones he usually has late at night. ![]()
